GYROKINESIS® is an important component of the GYROTONIC® methodology, which is in fact Yoga in Motion. While GYROTONIC® involves equipment; GYROKINESIS® is practiced during mat floor classes using also a stool. Small mat/floor group, private, semi-private classes are offered. GYROKINESIS® incorporates many key principles taken from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming as well as tai chi, though it is not based on these or other specific exercise models.

GYROKINESIS® classes typically include learning self-massage, movements and corresponding breathing patterns, called “awakening of the senses”. It then progresses through a series of spinal motions that mobilize the spine and pelvis through arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiraling. These movement patterns are repeated on other areas of the body to release the joints of the arms and legs in all possible directions. Some of the movements are performed on low stools while others are done lying down, sitting, or standing.

By the end of class you have completed roughly 100 different movements that leave your body feeling like it just had a full body massage. In the end you may be relaxed but for the duration of class is an intense workout that will make you sweat. You never hold a position for long but work at creating a fluid connection between the postures creating a dance that is invigorating and toning.

The effect of GYROKINESIS® is an increased range of motion and coordination. All of the moves take your joints through their full range of motion and increase strength and flexibility while providing a cardio workout similar to a brisk walk.

GYROKINESIS® is designed to move the spine and joints through their full, healthy range, through flowing, smooth, rhythmic movements. This leads to enhanced spine and joint articulation and mobilization and improves the circulation of blood, lymphatic fluids and energy in the body. The corresponding breathing exercises oxygenate blood; bolster the nervous system, and clear energy channels. The result is a balancing of the whole body: muscles, joints, bones, connective tissue and internal organs. Body awareness improves, and areas of tension soften. Meanwhile, muscular contraction, extension, flexibility and coordination increase.
